Crescent Moon, Silver 17, X-Large Expedition Snowshoe

Silver 17s are some mighty large, manly snowshoes.

  • These shoes are recommended for recreational snowshoers and their gear under 300lbs.
  • The Silver 17s are ideal for off trail exploration.
  • In spite of their size, these are the lightest "large" snowshoes on the market.
  • The Silver 17 features a cam-locking buckle binding system which accommodates sizes up to 11.
  • Although the Silver 17s are one of the largest snowshoes on the market they're by far lighter and easier to navigate than traditionally shaped shoes of similar dimensions. If you're headed off trail or breaking it, the Silver 17s will provide you with fantastic flotation as you tackle the tundra.
  • If your feet are larger than size 11, consider the XL version of the SPL binding on the Gold 17, which will fit up to size 15. So,get ready, get set, go explore!

Silver 17 and Gold 17 Series Comparison:

  • 2 year manufacturer warranty (The Gold 17 has a lifetime warranty).
  • Great snowshoes for expeditions in the deep powder!  (Same as Gold 17, but without traversing claws).
  • 4.6 lbs  (Gold 17 is heavier @ 5.3 lbs, due to the slightly beefier binding, the addition of traversing claws and because all crampons on the Gold 17 are Stainless Steel as apposed to aluminum on the Silver 17 (this makes them slightly less durable but lighter)).
  • Recommended for snowshoers under 300 lbs (same as Gold 17).
  • Provides best float for the back-country for snowshoers under 250 lbs (same as Gold 17).
  • 10" x 37" tapered frame for increased maneuverability (same as Gold 17).
  • Effortless SPL (single pull loop) cam-locking (tension-locking) buckle binding system over the foot and spring-cam heal straps, which provide for an excellent performance fit. (The Gold 17 has a slightly more heavy duty SPL binding with auto-locking buckles over the foot ((instead of cam-tension locking)) and a ratcheting heel strap (instead of spring-cam)).
  • Tapered frame, for increased maneuverability (Same as gold 17).
  • 3 aluminum crampons featuring intuitive "Toe Claw" design (Gold 17 has Stainless Steel Crampons which are stronger, however this adds more weight to the Gold 17).
  • Available in polished aluminum (Gold 17 is available in powder coated Red and Green.)
  • Made in Boulder, CO (Gold 17 is also made in Boulder, CO.)

Summary of the differences between the Gold & Silver series:

  • The Silver 17 does not have the additional traversing claws
  • The Silver 17 crampons are aluminum instead of Stainless Steel (which is stronger but heavier).
  • The Silver 17's binding heel strap is slightly less heavy duty and features a spring (tension)-locking rear buckle as apposed to the Gold 17 which has a rear ratcheting buckle.
  • The Silver 17 is only available in its bare, brushed aluminum color whereas the Gold 17 has two powder-coated colors options of green and red.
  • The Silver 17 binding system fits up to men's size 11 whereas the Gold 17's binding fits up to Men's size 15.
  • The Silver 17 is slightly lighter (7/10ths lb). This is due to the heavier duty binding system, the additional, stainless steel "traversing claws" and the powder coating on the Gold 17. This can be somewhat advantageous if you are looking for a lighter weight shoe (the Gold 12 running/race shoe uses aluminum) however the extra durable binding and the heavy duty, stainless steel traversing claws would certainly be beneficial for avid users straying from from the tail head.

Best Uses for Silver 17:

  • Ideal for backcountry touring for snowshoers under 300 lbs. Ideal for expedition use in deep, unpacked powder for snowshoers under 250 lbs.

Points of interest:

Awards (pertaining to this product):

  • In their 2009/2010 Winter Gear Guide, Backpacker Magazine chose Crescent Moon as the Best Binding on the market!

Sustainability:

  • Crescent Moon is dedicated to environmentally sustainability and manufactures most of its products in its Boulder, CO factory using wind-powered energy.
  • Crescent Moon Snowshoes are made without PVC (Polyvinyl-chloride), a common, toxic component used in most other brands of snowshoes.
  • The company recycles nearly 100% of its waste products including aluminum, stainless steel, cardboard and other materials.

The Binding (boot-straps and platform):

  • Crescent Moon's Sliver Series Uses a simple, but very cost effective combination of a fully adjustable harness system made of a flexible polymer, over-the-foot cam locking buckles and a spring-cam heel adjustment. The Silver 17 SPL binding provides unparalleled support and control on all terrains (slightly less durable than the beefier Gold 17 version).
  • A horizontal stabilizer has been added beneath the footplate for greater control, and they've significantly increased the size of the stomp pad for better traction and comfort in all terrain.
  • The SPL binding also distributes tension equally around your foot, providing the best possible fit and comfort, as well as additional side to side stability for significantly better performance than open toed binding designs.
  • Additionally, the SPL binding system is made with water-proof materials so it will not freeze, stretch, or come out of adjustment while in use.

The Decking (Platform):

  • All the Silver & Gold series shoes have high quality abrasion resistant decking material called Surlyn (R) decking in the front & TGS (the good stuff) in the rear.
  • Surlyn is a slick, durable, lightweight material used to provide frontal structural stability to the shoe.
  • TGS material is extra quiet when striding.
  • It is also stable and ultra durable in all snow conditions and the coldest of temperatures, and simply won't tear or fail with normal use.
  • It is extremely resistant to abrasion.
  • It is also textured for additional traction and performance.
  • The decking on Crescent Moon Snowshoes is balanced to distribute your body weight equally across the entire shoe. This design makes them easier to pull out of the snow, making it easier to walk, hike and climb

Float On Snow:

  • A lighter person will experience more "float" with this snowshoe than a heavier one. This is true of all snowshoes for all people.  The bigger the "footprint" of the snowshoe, the more float you will achieve.
  • As a trade off, larger snowshoes are generally less maneuverable and a bit heavier.

The Traction System (Crampons):

  • Crescent Moon Snowshoes have the only three-claw crampon traction system on the market, so you can really get a grip.
  • Inherently better than standard two-crampon systems, they feature the only genuine toe claw found on any snowshoe. As you walk, you use your whole foot, shifting your weight for balance and traction with each step. So they positioned the stainless steel teeth and claws to dig in not only at the heel and ball, but also at the toe, giving you complete control.
  • All of their crampons come with protective, snow shedding shields to prevent buildup of snow and ice.

The Frame:

  • The frame is made from lightweight, TIG welded, aircraft-grade, 6063 aluminum tubing, shaped and welded by hand and Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) providing the greatest strength, durability & reliability available in any snowshoe.

The Guarantee (Silver Series 2 year warranty):

  • Crescent Moon guarantees the quality of every showshoe they make. Any defect in their materials or workmanship will be repaired, or the snowshoe replaced, at their expense and returned to you within ten working days. Damage attributed to acts of nature (cars, dogs, tires etc.) and to normal wear and tear will be repaired at reasonable rates. All of their Silver series shoes carry a 2 year warranty.

Have fun!
