New Chapter Probiotic All Flora®

LiveWhole Food Probiotics for Optimal Digestive and Immune System Function*

Available from The Green Chalet in 60 and 120 V-Cap sizes

Probiotics with a Purpose™

Live Probiotics for Optimal Digestive and Immune System Function*

Probiotic All-Flora contains nine strains of live probiotics cultured together on a non- dairy whole-food medium and then combined with growth-stimulating prebiotic Organic Apples, and Organic Inulin sourced from Organic Jerusalem Artichokes.

The live probiotics in Probiotic All-Flora, including revered probiotic strains such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Lactobacillus helveticus, help support optimal digestive and immune system function.*

When the culturing of Probiotic All-Flora is complete, the synbiotic-rich whole-food medium and live probiotics are freeze-dried together, a process that preserves their potency until consumed. Once consumed, the cultured whole-food medium and prebiotic whole foods activate the probiotics and enhance their effects. Both are part of the synergistic whole that benefits the entire digestive tract and immune system.*

Whole-Food Probiotics for Digestive Health and Immune Support*

The Medium is the Message!  Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that occur naturally in the human intestinal tract. Foods “cultured” with beneficial strains of probiotics such as yogurt and kefir have been used throughout history to improve overall health and vitality, and today, there are many studies reinforcing their ability to balance and promote digestive health.* Probiotics also play an important role in modulating the immune system, 70% of which is located in the gut.*

To make a probiotic supplement, selected strains of beneficial bacteria must first be cultured on a food medium, such as milk or soy. Since each strain of probiotics has an affinity for a different part of the digestive tract, and a unique mechanism of action, a product that delivers multiple strains is preferable to single strain products. As the probiotics replicate, they biotransform the food medium, breaking down nutrients and making them more bioavailable while secreting beneficial compounds into the medium called “synbiotics.” Research suggests that synbiotics are largely responsible for the benefits of probiotics. In other words, “the medium is the message.”

Most probiotic supplement manufacturers separate the probiotics from their food medium once the desired number of cultures is achieved, and therefore fail to deliver the full range of health benefits associated with eating probiotic foods. New Chapter ’s Probiotics with a Purpose line, however, uniquely offers multi- species blends of live probiotics with the synbiotic-rich organic growth medium intact.

Probiotic All Flora by New chapter
Used to mix a powder. This is much more convenient in capsule form and roughly the same price as the other brand I used to purchase.

          New Chapter:
    Passed!:

Why we chose them:  New Chapter is a model company for the manufacturers we seek to support. They have an incredible line of effective, sustainable, well made products that are in high demand, and yet rather than use their success and clout to flex their corporate muscle over society in order to gain a greater portion of market share, they use it to improve the world around them through innovative practices and solutions such as supporting organic non-GMO agriculture, improving the sustainability of their operations and engaging in philanthropist activities.

    Pros:
    • Whole Food Products:
      • New Chapter makes whole food products, NOT synthetic Isolates.
      • The Company cultures each ingredient in live probiotics to create a whole-food complex the human body easily recognizes and absorbs.
    • Validated by Science:
      • New Chapter is dedicated to scientific validation.
      • They look to Nature first, to guide them in the formulation of their products, but they rely on modern science to validate their effectiveness.
      • The New Chapter Scientific Team includes the following credentialed scientists covering multiple disciplines including both traditional and naturopathic medicine, integrative medicine, urology, biology, biochemistry, botany, agriculture and nutrition:
        • Michael Balick, Ph.D
        • Dr. Robert Newman Ph.D.
        • Dr. Taryn Forrelli
        • Richard Sarnat, M.D.
      • New ChapterĂs scientific partners include scientists from research institutions like Columbia University, The Cleveland Clinic, and the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
    • Extraction Process:
      • While most other manufacturers use a harsh, high heat process utilizing hexane and acetone (industrial solvents used in dry cleaning solutions and nail polish remover), New ChapterĂs uses their supercritical extraction process using a natural (chemical-solvent free) way to extract the plant, which the company states, ìdelivers greater purityĂ®.
      • The company also blends their ingredients for a synergistic effect, using science and tradition as their guides.
    • Organic:
      • A portion of the ingredients in their supplements are certified organic.
      • Their ingredients are sourced from around the world as well as at their own farm in Costa Rica.
      • They were the first company in the world to produce a full line of certified organic whole-food vitamins and minerals?
      • Note: Organic crops are on average, more nutrient dense than conventionally grown crops, up to 20 percent more for certain minerals and, on average, about 30 percent for antioxidants.
    • Sustainability:
      • New Chapter has been working toward an organic, sustainable world since they began in 1982, to nurture and sustain Mother Earth, the source of natural healing..
      • Chairman Tom Newmark is the man who leads their organic mission.
      • New Chapter supports organizations such as the Whole Planet Foundation to promote the shift to Organic sustainability at home and around the globe.
    • Non GMO:  www.nongmoproject.org
      • New Chapter is committed to rooting out genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
      • TheyĂre the first and only vitamin and supplement company to have at least 75% of their products Non-GMO Project Verified.
      • They intend to achieve 100% Non-GMO Project verification for our entire line of whole-food vitamins, minerals and herbs in the future.
    • Ethical sourcing of their botanicals:
    • Sustainability:
      • Recyclable Supplement boxes made from 100% PCC?
      • The Company states that they use recycled pens and used office furniture as well as a closed loop corrugated cardboard system to help reduce their carbon footprint.
      • The Company also states that they are continually reassessing their transporting, packaging, and sourcing practices, to make increase efficiency and decrease environmental impact.
    Neutral
    • We look forward to the day that ALL of their ingredients are Non-GMO and Organic but also understand that this is a VERY difficult goal to achieve.
    Cons
    • None at this time
Notes: New Chapter is a privately held corporation meaning that their shares are not publicly traded. This means that they do not have to answer to public shareholders and therefore have more control over the direction if their company, more typical of a family owned company.

New Chapter is engaged in so many righteous endeavors we choose to include additional information in the box below.  We feel there are some important links to organizations that many may find valuable and even consider implementing within their own communities.

    Biodynamic Farming:

    • New ChapterĂs ìBiodynamic Luna Nueva ginger and turmeric FarmĂ® is a model for agriculture which takes full advantage of the complex relationship between farmer, soil, plants, animals, sun, moon and tides.
    • Biodynamic farming increases the farmĂs biodiversity and protects the natural environment. It recognizes the farm as a closed, self-nourishing system, often using livestock (oxen) to work the earth instead of machinery avoiding the pollutants created by tractors and other farm equipment while goats and pigs happily clear rested fields for planting.
    • This 200 acre Costa Rican Rainforest Farm has also achieved Demeter certification ñ the highest level of organic farming in the world and a true testament to our organic mission.
    • New Chapter purchased Luna Nueva in 1994, when most commercial ginger was heavily sprayed and fumigated. They began growing blue-ring ginger that to explodes with flavor and phytonutrients.
    • Since then, Luna has evolved to take on an even deeper meaning.  It now has an eco-lodge that teaches visitors about environmental stewardship, sustainable agriculture and community development.  The lodge also hosts conferences on topics like permaculture and ethnobotany and offers field study opportunities through Earth University.

    Sustainable Sourcing:

    • New Chapter travels the globe searching for suppliers to partner with that share their commitment to sustainable sourcing.
    • They require their suppliers to report on conditions in the field on an annual basis and they strategically choose farms to visit to ensure compliance and full transparency.
    • The Company sources their raw materials in a way that ensures the ability of future generations to benefit from the bounty of these natural resources. Protection is also given to the local people for use of their own native assets. Favor is given to organically grown or wild crafted materials.
    • They believe that a product intended to heal must be a healing force for every member of the supply chain.
    • Throughout their supply chain, from Vermont to India, they engage with partnerĂs whose workers are treated with respect and provided with working conditions that are safe, healthy and balanced.
    • Additionally, they promote equal rights, access to suitable housing, food, education, and health care, as well as freedom of expression, movement, association, and sufficient time for rest and leisure.

    Environmental Integrity

    • New Chapter uses 100% post-consumer recycled stocks for their product boxes, marketing materials and display units.  And they use 100% recycled corrugated shipping boxes within a closed loop system, which means the corrugate they recycle is looped back to them for reuse again and again.
    • They also use glass bottles for most of their supplements, one of the most efficiently recycled materials on earth and the healthiest choice for consumers.
    • As of 2011, they currently compost, recycle or reuse more than 85% of the waste we produce.  TheyĂve also contracted with a local farm that takes their compostable waste for use in their own organic compost.
    • New ChapterĂs website runs on 100% solar power. They also utilize high efficiency, full-spectrum lighting throughout their headquarters and motion sensor lighting in their rest rooms.
    • In 2009, New Chapter performed a baseline carbon inventory and assessment ñ an important step toward understanding our carbon and energy impact. They are comparing this baseline analysis year-by-year to help measure their performance, meet reduction goals and report annual achievements.

Philanthropy: New Chapter has partnered with the following organizations because their either Focus on human health, act as environmental stewards, work to further the accessibility and awareness of organic food, farming and traditional herbal medicine or contribute to community life in the Brattleboro, Vermont area - their hometown.

    • In 2005, New Chapter created Sacred Seeds, a global initiative to save endangered plants and healing knowledge at their Costa Rican farm, Luna Nueva.
    • It began as a single sanctuary for medicinal plants that were vulnerable to the loss of habitat, inappropriate harvesting, or climate change.
    • They worked with indigenous communities, a Costa Rican ethnobotanist, and student interns to maintain this sanctuary.
    • Their hope was to promote awareness of critical plant conservation, preserve biodiversity, and reconnect indigenous communities to their healing heritage through the protection of these culturally and scientifically significant plant species.
    • Today they have 12 foundational Sacred Seed Gardens around the globe, working with the Missouri Botanical Gardens William L. Brown Center, their goal is to have a Sacred Seed sanctuaries in ecosystems throughout the world.

    Bumi Sehat: (www.bumisehatbali.org  or (www.amillionmothers.org

    BEEC: (www.beec.org)

    • New Chapter has been a long-time sponsor of the Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center (BEEC):  A member-based, nonprofit organization founded to sustain an ecologically informed citizenry through education and action in order to enhance the vitality of southern VermontĂs bioregion.

    The Green Wave Program:  (www.greenwave.cbd.int)

    • The Green Wave is an international project to educate children about biodiversity and to inspire the planting of native trees across the globe.
    • Every year, people all around the world celebrate biodiversity on whatĂs called the International Day for Biodiversity.
    • The Green Wave is an effort focused on working with schools to educate on the need for biological preservation.
    • This year (2010) New Chapter participated in The Green Wave Program to direct their educational outreach to local communities and schools.
    • They (along with Seven Vermont food Co-Ops) ran a 6 week campaign to raise money for trees to be planted at a local schools. Every purchase of a New Chapter product corresponded to one leaf. 20 leaves bought one tree to be planted at a partnering school. The trees were then donated to the partnering school and planted by students!
    • Plans are already in place to take this program to a national level, working with larger retail chains as well as the national Green Wave Campaign in areas around the world.

    Kindle Farm: (www.kindlefarm.org)

    • Kindle Farm uses alternative educational approaches for boys and young men who do not succeed in the traditional classroom structure inherent in the vast majority of public and private educational settings due to trauma or disruption in their lives.
    • Their holistic approach to learning deeply connects with New ChapterĂs philosophy of whole healing.
    • Students are welcomed to learn through experience. Horticulture, forestry, bike maintenance, mechanics, carpentry, and culinary arts fill out a studentĂs day.
    • Their organic farms provide the space for vegetable and market garden, a greenhouse, and extensive forested land for creating mountain bike trails and studying aspects of plant and animal life.
    • While learning about garden planning, seeding, transplanting, watering, harvesting, and cover cropping, students are also learning about teamwork, problem solving, dependability, goal setting, and cooperation.
