Why we chose them:

Preserve Products leave little to be desired in their commitment to sustainability. They have been helping to increased demand for no.5 plastics and even promote the transfer of recyclable waste goods through their Gimme 5 program (see link below).

Pros:

Entire product line is made virtually entirely from recycled no 5 plastics.
All Preserve plastics are BPA Free.
The products can be recycled again at the end of their life.
The company offers to recycle their no. 5 plastic products through their Gimme 5 program.
All Preserve products are minimally packaged to limit waste and almost all of their packaging is sustainable.
Their recyclable eating utensils are very durable. They can be bent and twisted many times before they break.
Their oral hygiene products were evaluated by oral specialists and have been received excellent reviews by users.
This is a truly progressive company.

Neutral:

We would like to see more biodegradable materials used in these types of products, however Preserve is creating a much needed demand for the recycling of no. 5 plastics. These products will also typically outlast the biodegradable versions further offsetting their ecological impacts.

Cons:

Their Razors do little to offset disposable consumption. At this time, only the handles are recyclable, yet the blades are what need to be replaced frequently. In our opinion, Preserve would have been better off to postpone creating their handle and instead develop a recyclable razor head that could be used with many existing, popular razor handles. By offering their handle to customers, they may actually be promoting people to dispose of their current razor handle (by trashing it) when it is still in perfect working condition, thus actually doing doing more harm than good. For this reason, we will not stock this product until Preserve develops a recyclable razor head.

Manufacturing: U.S Base Manufacturer uses "Grid" power within California's strict standards. Preserve's CEO bikes to work on most days and runs his vehicle on Veggie Oil. Preserve also recycles and composts aggressively and seeks to keep packaging to a minimum. Additionally, Preserve toothpicks have less pollution impact upon production than their plastic counterparts.
Product Content: Wood is from sustainably managed U.S. forests & flavors are from natural oils (non-organic).

We would have given these Eco-Toothpicks a A+ if the natural oils were organic or fair-trade and if they held up a little better. However, this is still an EXCELLENT rating!
